BIS - THE NEW TRANSISTOR HEROS (GRAND ROYAL) About a year ago when all those "School House Rock" songs were covered by various buzz bands, I remember thinking, "gee, I wish bands of today could write fun songs like that instead of just cover them." Well, Manda Rin, John Disco, and Sci-Fi Steven of Bis have answered my prayers! The big surprise is that although this youthful trio sounds like they were raised on a steady diet of Sugar Smacks and Saturday morning cartoons, the truth is that they hail from Scotland. Nevertheless, Bis' debut release is jammed with smart synth-pop teenage anthems that could easily be mistaken for the new American soundtrack. Eccentric like Cibo Mato, but smart like Sonic Youth Bis cleverly combine the best of new wave, punk, and disco to create a sound more invigorating than main-lining pixie sticks! |
