INBETWEEN (TRAUMA) Like the Cardigans, Souls is comprised of four stylish Swedes with the solitary female fronting the band and handling vocals, but the similarities stop there. For one thing, Souls isn't as pretty, visually or sonically, but that doesn't negate Soul's appeal. Souls is simply more concerned with expressing their aggression. Were the Cardigans get lounge-y/disco-ish and beg "love me, love me," the Souls assault with crashing guitars and demand it! Acerbic lyrical themes are belted out over oscillating waves of guitar explosions. There are no traces of wispy sweetness in Cecilia Norlund's voice when she howls, "I wonder where your tongue has been before you tasted mine?" This is the Cardigans after a spine implant! |
