PRIMUS - BROWN ALBUM (INTERSCOPE)
Release date: 7/1/97
Review: Angel Bennett

Brown in not a color that immediately attracts attention. The Brown Album is therefore aptly named because it doesn't grab you with the engine revving hooks that Primus has become so famous for. While the spotlighted bass, driving repetitions, and idiosyncratic lyrics still mark Primus's signature sound, they fail to draw the familiar smirk to ones face. Recorded using only vintage analog equipment, the sound is warmer than previous releases and perhaps that was part of Primus's master plan; to make this album more subdued and more akin to a brown shoe that after time becomes your favorite. Fans will not be disappointed with the Brown Album, but the new listener will require additional exposure to the band's other colors.
