Wonder
Mom For starters, let me say that this is the coolest event I've come across since I moved to the West Coast. I actually heard about it through a friend (David) who works at Radical Entertainment, a San Francisco-based game design company who are one of the sponsors this year. It's rad to see that snowboarders are doing this (far more impressive than acceptance into the Olympics). When I began snowboarding over seven years ago, most of the mountains wouldn't allow us, and everyone (including most of my family) thought I was a nut case--everyone but the one person who fully supported me--my mom. She is truly an exuberant being: an artist, athlete, and overall passionate and compassionate human being. It's given me great pleasure to watch her get involved in inline skating (not the spandexed weekend rider, but a total skate punk like I was as a teenager). She brags often of her skating prowess, and frequents many indoor and outdoor skate parks, including a week-long trip to London just to skate. Unfortunately, this winter I received the worst news a son can hear. My mom located a lump in her breast and after several trips to the doctors it was diagnosed as cancer. Apparently the estrogen pills which she had been taking for years during menopause caused it. Why shitty things happen to the best of people I don't know. But she is a fighter and is approaching this like any challenge or obstacle in life--with focus and passion. That is why I must write to you. What you people are doing makes me proud to have chosen the way to get done the mountain that I did. To see so many people involved stokes me. I wish I could be there, but I could not afford it this year, but am interested in what kind of volunteers you might need. I live in SF and play in a local band (check us out at www.downtemper.com) and am interested in any info you have or work locally you might need done. I thank you (and my mom thanks
you) |
