BOARDING FOR BREAST CANCER’S 4TH ANNUAL SNOWBOARD + MUSIC FESTIVAL, PRESENTED BY POLO SPORT, EXCEEDES ALL EXPECTATIONS

Boarding For Breast Cancer (BBC), the youth-focused, non-profit organization working to elevate awareness among today’s youth and raise funds for breast cancer research and educational projects, celebrated it’s 4th Annual Snowboarding + Music Festival, Presented by Polo Sport, on April 17, 1999 at Sierra-At-Tahoe Resort, CA.

This year’s festival exceeded all expectations from breaking its fundraising goal, to hosting the largest crowds in event history, to delivering a six band line-up that rocked all day long. Additionally, the event saw increased spectator interaction at the breast cancer educational arena, and drew a record number of top professional snowboarders.

The fourth annual festival broke its fundraising goal by raising over $100,000 for the cause, while drawing over 5,000 spectators. Proceeds have been donated to The Breast Cancer Fund, The Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the Nina Hyde Center For Breast Cancer Research. Additionally, a portion of event proceeds will go towards furthering BBC’s youth-focused educational programs.

Celebrity event host Kennedy from MTV kept the huge crowd entertained in between live performances by what may be the most diverse line-up the event has seen to date: Spearhead, Blink 182, Less Than Jake, Ozomatli, Alkaholiks, and a special performance by Mike Watt, Stephen Perkins, and Peter DiStefano, all formerly of Porno For Pyros.

The halfpipe and big air exhibitions included a plethora of the world’s top professional athletes including Olympic bronze medalist Shannon Dunn, Tina Basich, Michelle Taggart, Ross Powers, and Mike Basich. The top pros in halfpipe were Kirk Warner (Nidecker) and Kyla Duffy (Airwalk). In the big air, top pros were the brother and sister team Mike Basich and Tina Basich (Sims). The top amateur man and woman in halfpipe were Ryan Kronenberg (Sims) and Holly Lyons (Elan).

The event’s educational message was sent through guest speakers and numerous breast cancer exhibits. Educational displays included presence by BBC’s beneficiaries, a photo exhibit on breast cancer survivors, an art registry organization for breast cancer survivor, a local heath care provider, and a masseuse promoting massage as a means of therapy. The "BBC Scavenger Hunt" lead hundreds of event spectators from exhibit to exhibit.

Over the past four years Boarding For Breast Cancer’s fundraising efforts have exceeded $345,000 for the cause.
