Boarding For Breast Cancer announces the date for its 4th Annual Snowboarding and Music Festival

Boarding For Breast Cancer (BBC), a youth-focused organization working to elevate awareness among today’s youth and raise funds for breast cancer research and educational projects, will hold its 4th Annual Snowboard and Music Festival on April 17, 1999, at Sierra-At-Tahoe Resort, CA.

BBC was founded in 1996 as a snowboard and music event in memory of Monica Steward, a prominent member of the snowboard community, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 28. Since 1996, BBC has established itself as an organization, striving to further its mission and broaden its reach through the development of new educational fund-raising programs that convey its message to American youth.

"The organization’s primary goal is to reach as many young people as possible and inspire them to take action now, doing whatever they can to reduce the risks of the disease now and later in life," says Kathleen Gasperini, cofounder of BBC. "Going into BBC’s fourth year, we are excited to be able to develop new programs that will bring BBC’s message across the country."

The BBC Snowboard and Music Festival combines pro snowboard exhibitions, world-class music acts, and educational and awareness exhibits for a one day blow-out. Over the past three years, the event has been embraced by the snowboard and music communities. Top professional riders like Shannon Dunn, Tina Basich, and Michelle Taggart have attended each year. Over eighty participating industry companies, including Burton Snowboards, Vans, and Salomon/Bonfire, have sponsored the event and music performers such as the Foo Fighters, the Beastie Boys, Primus, and Luscious Jackson have played for crowds exceeding 5,000 annually. The BBC Festival has also gained major exposure on MTV (News and Sports), Lifetime, American Journal, E! TV, Much Music, and The Rosie O’Donnell show.

In 1999, a capacity crowd of over 7,000 spectators is expected at the 4th Annual Snowboard and Music Festival and the organization is aiming for a fundraising goal of over $100,000.

Last March, BBC launched a Board-A-Thon program at Stratton Mountain, VT, and will be expanding the program to include three events throughout the 1999 season. The tentative dates for these events are January 23, at Stratton Mountain, VT; February 14 at The Summit, WA; and TBD at Vail, CO. The Board-A-Thons are regional events in which participants collect pledges for the cause and hit the slopes for a day of riding and activities on and off the snow.

In addition to developing a summer / fall surfing and music event in 1999, BBC will also continue to send a youth-focused, interactive display across the country via premiere events including the 1999 Warped Tour, BEWI’s SnowSports Expos, and various industry trade shows.

To date, Boarding For Breast Cancer’s fund-raising efforts have exceeded $237,000. Proceeds have been donated to The Breast Cancer Fund and The Susan G. Komen Foundation. BBC plans to continue seeking beneficiaries that align with the organization’s mission, while continuing to develop BBC’s own youth-oriented outreach programs.

We are seeking assistance from media to help raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. Please add BBC’s programs to your event calendar listing, include BBC in your editorial coverage plan and/or place a BBC PSA ad in your publication.
