Kosglow Sweeps Hunter Alpine Events
Lisa Kosglow, of Boise, Idaho made it two in a row during the finals at the AST Hunter Mountain slalom when she defeated Paule Bertrand in day two of the three day competition. (Kosglow also won Friday's GS). "I had a pretty rough finals," Kosglow said. "I fell in the first run and thought I was out of it. I just stayed focused and pulled it. I'm very happy with the way this season is starting." In the men's competition 17-year-old junior world champion Travis McLain, of Aspen, Colorado squeezed by Stratton Mountain's Matt Mitchell to take the men's competition. In the first run of the finals Mitchell fell. Then in the second run McLain edged out and Mitchell made it to the line first, but it wasn't enough. "If Matt hadn't fallen in the first run there's no way I would have won this," McLain said at the finish. Mitchell was just happy to be in second. "Hey, I'm not going to complain about second place," Mitchell said. "I got beat by a kid. I'm just happy I was able to get him in the second run." Friday's rain turned to snow by the time the 51 competitors began. The wet snow was a bit of a problem, but not that much of a factor. "On one of my runs I got down to the last few gates and hit a section of really slow snow," he said. "I almost went right over, but I got back to the top of the course and waxed up and had no problems the rest of the day." The 658 meter course had a vertical drop of 110 meters, a smooth knoll halfway down, and crater sized ruts. "I enjoy burley courses," Kosglow said. "I seem to do better the worse it gets and this course got pretty bad." Competition continues tomorrow with the halfpipe competition in a pipe that rider Nate Simms said makes the heros look like rookies. Archibald and Kosglow Take Hunter Mountain GS (12-13-96)
