Kosglow and Jensen Take
Kirkwood Giant Slalom (1-10-97)
Canadian Nelsen Jensen and Lisa Kosglow of Boise, Idaho took the top spots in the Giant Slalom as the America Snowboard Tour kicked off its second event at Kirkwood, California. The GS course at Kirkwood started out steep and then rolled into a flat glade section before dropping to the finish line. The snow was firm and riders seemed to enjoy it. The whole course was smooth, Jensen said. It was super smooth riding. I just carried speed off the top into the flats and it was all gold. On his first run, Jensen went down and had to hop back uphill to get a gate that he slid by. He thought his day was pretty much over until he got to the finish and realized there had been a timing error. The starter didn't get a start time at the top, he said. Someone told me I had to do a rerun so I went back up to the top and put one together. The re-run allowed Jensen to hook of the fastest time in the first run. Putting him in first place by three seconds. The course favors my riding, he said. I like to get the steeps over with at the start and then just hammer down the flats and get through the finish line. In the second run Stratton Mountain School racer Peter Thorndike turned in the fastest time on the course. I was in tenth place after the first run so I new I had to just let in run in the second, Thorndike said. It wasn't enough for the top spot, but it did move him into second place ahead of Australian racer Brett Leask. It's not that the women's side of the AST Alpine competition is getting boring, it's just that Lisa Kosglow of Boise, Idaho is making a habit out of taking the top spot on the podium. The Kirkwood GS win is the fourth win and fifth podium finish since the season began. She also won the GS at the Grand Prix at Sugarloaf and finished third at Snowmass last weekend.
Kosglow slaughtered the competition by finishing six seconds ahead of second and third place finishers Julie Zell and Audrey Rice, making some wonder if this tour is just too easy. It's never as easy as it looks, Kosglow says. You never know. The American Snowboard Tour continues tomorrow at Kirkwood with the halfpipe competition in which Todd Richards hopes to repeat his win at last weekend's Aspen Grand Prix.
