Kosglow Sweeps, Jones Charges in North American Finals Giant Slalom (March 15, 1997)

Lisa Kosglow wrapped up a perfect season by winning her eighth Alpine event on Saturday when she beat Vermont local Betsy Shaw in the final GS of the American Snowboard Tour North American Championships at Mount Snow, Vermont. Jeremy Jones ran away with the men's event by smoking Mark Fawcett by nearly a second in the second run.

Jeremy Jones did everything right today at Mt. Snow. He had the fastest first and second run times. In other words, he was unbeatable.

At start time the course was anything but solid. During the night freezing rain piled up on the powder from the day before and left two inches of breakable crust for the riders to negotiate. "It's a lot more difficult to commit on this course because you don't know if it's going to hold or if you're going to break through," said Mark Fawcett, who had the fourth fastest time after the first run.

Kosglow agreed. "The conditions could be better, but the course is good," she said. "The hill has some nice rollers.

The strategy of the day was to ride solid, according to Jeremy Jones. "I tried to stay balanced and ride with no mistakes," he said.

That's exactly what he did. Jones had the fastest time in the first run by two-tenths of a second and went even faster on his second run. "With Fawcett, Hoss, and Jasey behind me it definitely was a motivator," Jones said.

Kosglow did the same. "I just went out and put down two solid runs and it was enough," she said. "I mean, anytime you're racing against Betsy Shaw you've got to ride well, and today I did."

In the Paul Mitchell Rider's Cup Peter Thorndike held off Jeff Archibald for the overall title. Lisa Kosglow had the women's Alpine title tied up at Mammoth.

Competition continues at the AST North American Finals with the Halfpipe.
