Halfpipe Qualifiers From the World Championships From San Candido, Italy
by Peter Foley
(January 24, 1997)

Tough day for the Americans in the Half Pipe. We qualified 3 for the round of 16 (Dan Smith, Ross Powers and Rob Kingwill) Ross rode well but met the eventual winner, Fabian Roherer from Switzerland in the first round. Kinger fell in his first round match up. Dan Smith made it through the first round, but in his round of 8 heat he missed his back flip and was defeated. It's the first time these guys have met up with the best Internatioal halfpipe riders and they definitly have the same abilities, but not the same contest experience and polish.

The qualifying run for the Parallel Slalom was held today. In the men we qualified 4 athletes to the round of 16, Mike Jacoby, Anton Pogue, Tom O'Brien and Tom Lyman. Jacoby won the Qualifying run by close to a second. Stacia Hookom qualified for the round of 8. PSL finals are tomorrow and Boarder cross is on Sunday. The boarder cross course looks like it will be great, with big jumps and banks and even a 360 degree tunnel.
