Vans Triple Crown Miracle at Breckenridge: Day one
Dec. 3, 1998
Breckenridge, CO

Snow guns were working overtime for the past month as Breckenridge snow-makers created a miracle on Peak 8 getting ready for the first stop of the $350,000 Vans Triple Crown of Snowboarding.

A snow oasis in Summit County.

"Every bit of snow in Summit County is right up there on that course," joked Rob Giustina, terrain designer for the event. "When we got here the halfpipe was perfectly prepared to spec. The big air landing was already built and the Snowboard Cross course was whaled out. Breckenridge did a great job."

While the Northwest has been getting pummeled with snow since late October, Summit County has been dry. Most resorts here are open with limited runs on man-made snow. None of this stopped more than 300 snowboarders for registering for a shot at $125,000 in prize money offered by Vans. The three day event will feature men’s and women’s Snowboard Cross, Big Air, and Halfpipe.

Thursday, December 3, 1998 featured the men’s and women’s Snowboard Cross qualifiers, women’s big air qualifiers, and the first run of the men’s Big Air.
