Dillon and Schilcher Win $50,000 Corner Jump January 13, 2001
Another great night in Fieberbrunn/Austria. Thousands of cheering spectators and a seven meter high monster of a corner jump, flying high riders and smiling faces everywhere. Fieberbrunn simply rocks for the 11th time!
US Rider Keir Dillon (Burton) from Pennsylvania and the 19 years young Austrian rookie/shooting star Claudia Schilcher won the Superfinals and are the respective Lady and Lord of the Board 2001.
What was meant to replace the traditional Halfpipe and so the freestyle element of the European Open, turned out to be a very futuristic and, above all, exciting competition-format with a lot of impact for both, the riders and the crowd.
Even two weeks ago, things were more looking like cancellation of the entire event due to the ongoing lack of snow all over Europe, in addition it was too warm for producing snow with machines. But thanks to the Organizing Comitee and some "tyrolean style" stubbornness (I want the Open and I want Freestyle!), 2000 cubic meters of Snow trucked in from other mountains in the region, the Corner Jump was built within shortest time. The sponsors sticked to their committment and backed up this decision and so the 50.000 US$ were up for grabs.
And a lot of the best riders made their way to Fieberbrunn, though no Motorola Points (counting for the Motorola ISF Championships in Halfpipe) were awarded.
"I can't believe this! I got into competition Snowboarding during this summer's camps, luckily found a sponsor believing in me and now I'm top on the podium", superstoked Claudia Schicher statet. She won by pulling a huge BS Indie Double Grab and sticking it smoothly.
Keir Dillon was to be regarded as a favorite, he's well known for big airs and long grabs, but guys like double Air and Style winner Stefan Gimpl (AUT/Burton), Canadian Mike Michalchuck (Burton) or Xaver Hoffmann (GER/BurtonTD1) were in the starting field, too and who saw young suomi rider Heiki Sorsa (Burton) and Chech rider Martin Cernik (LibSilver) during training and qualification could not be too sure about who will win. But Dillon was about one meter higher than the rest of the field and his 540 Stalefishes, 540 tailgrabs or BS Sevens were always clean and smoothly landed .. until the very last hit where he hit the icy wall really hard with his lower back. "I was last to start the third and last hit and I knew I had already won but I wanted to go even bigger for the crowd. I hit it really hard" he stated.
Tonight's party will feature top notch hip hop acts like Aphrodelics and Outkast, and under http://www.lycos.de/webguides/music_mp3/specials/eo/lordsoftheboards/webcast.html you can see and hear it live on the Internet.

The Motorola ISF Tour continues next weekend with the Nescaf Championships in Leysin/SUI, featuring a parallel GS and a Halfpipe competition. Another 100.000 US$ are being donated to the world's bet riders there and we'll for sure keep you in the loop.
