Park City Opens Super Pipe January 12, 2001
Park City, Utah - Want to feel like an Olympian? Visit Park City Mountain Resort and ride the Eagle Race Arena Super 'Pipe, the official venue of the men's and women's halfpipe competition of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
"The Super 'Pipe has taller decks, a wider transition and overall longer length than traditional halfpipes, and the halfpipe used in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympic Games," said Jeff Frost, snowboard and events manager at Park City Mountain Resort.
The Super 'Pipe is 522 feet long, 55 feet wide, has 17-feet-tall decks, a consistent 17-degree pitch and is constructed of approximately 500,000 square feet of snow. Compared to the specs of a traditional halfpipe - 400 feet long, 35 feet wide, and 15 foot decks - the Super 'Pipe is a monster.
"The International Ski Federation (FIS, governing body of snowboarding and skiing) approved an overall bigger halfpipe for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games based on rider feedback," Frost said. "The Super 'Pipe is both safer and allows riders to perform bigger tricks."
The new halfpipe is cut and groomed with a cutting implement designed by Snow Turbo and a grooming machine by Bombardier -- both provided to Park City Mountain Resort through an agreement with the Salt Lake Organizing Committee.
The halfpipe competition portion of Park City Mountain Resort's final Olympic test event, the Nokia Snowboard FIS "Countdown to Gold," will be held at the Super 'Pipe on March 1, 2001. Following this event, the 'pipe will be filled in to accommodate the second half of the "Countdown to Gold" - a snowboarding parallel giant slalom race on March 4, 2001. These World Cup events follow the same sequence slated to occur during the Olympic snowboard competition in 2002.
Other events to be held at the Super 'Pipe include the King of the Wasatch amateur halfpipe competition on February 10.
The Super 'Pipe is groomed every Monday, Wednesday and Friday following its official opening on January 15th. A Park City Mountain Resort season pass or daily lift ticket is required to ride the Super 'Pipe.
Additional snowboarding offerings at Park City Mountain Resort include the PayDay halfpipe - ranked among the best halfpipes in the United States by Snowboard Life magazine; and two terrain parks, located in the Sitka and Blanche runs at the Resort.
Park City Mountain Resort is the official venue for all snowboarding events of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
