SIA Snow Show and On Snow Demo (Undercover!) (1-19-24-97)
Airwalk and Burton Step Out of Step-In Market For Another Year (10-15-96)

Twenty years ago, nobody would have suspected that a little snowboard company in Vermont would eventually be leading the outerwear industry with snowboarding-specific clothing.

Construction is critical. A blown seam, a faulty zipper, frayed fabric, or a leaky panel and hey, this jacket is crap. Burton starts with its own, proprietary materials, for toughness, waterproofing, and breathability. Key seams are triple-stitched, with the seams taped and facing downward to keep out water. Quality zippers, snaps, patented one-handed cordlocks, hook and loop closures--all of it team tested and approved. The crap got weeded out a long time ago.

Functional design takes these components and builds snowboard-specific outerwear that leaves people saying "these people think of everything." Actually, Burton riders do most of the thinking, because they wear the stuff year round. When they go to work in the morning, this is their suit. Details like vents to dump excess heat, zip-in jacket and vest components, removable hoods that you actually enjoy wearing, anchors for glove leashes in the sleeves, a pass pocket inside the hem--when you reach for a pocket, it's right where you expect it, it's warm, it's fleece lined, and it zips shut easily.

Burton divides its outerwear line into five purposeful categories: Tri-Lite, Outland, Universe, Toast, and Biolight.

Tri-Lite utilizes the most advanced fabrics in snowboarding: highly breathable, highly waterproof, three-ply Tri-Lite and Tri-Lite AK. That means the moisture wicking-lining is laminated to the interior of the fabric, and no additional lining is necessary. The result is a lightweight, tough, packable shell material that is unmatched for dryness. Tri-Lite is built for the most intense snowboarding conditions.

Outland uses an all new material, Storm-Lite AK, for double the waterproofing this season over last. Outland pieces are fully-featured for the worst conditions, and completely vented for the best.

Universe is built from Storm-Lite material, a two-layer coated fabric that is waterproof and breathable. It's also insulated with Core Insulation. Burton concentrates warmth and insulation around the body, where you need the warmth, with less insulation in the sleeves, for arm mobility. This makes the aptly-named Universe series suitable for nearly any conditions.

Toast is a completely new series, built of Storm-Lite and warmed with allover insulation. Toast was developed for riders who never seem to be able to wear enough to stay warm, or who are further chilled by the idea of throwing down big bucks for an un-insulated jacket.

Biolight is just as waterproof and breathable as Universe and Toast, but lighter weight. Lined with mesh, with taped seams in the pants, Biolight cuts no corners. It's simple protection that leaves you free to layer up with whatever you have underneath.

Many of the new outerwear pieces are even more versatile when you add an Insulator Jacket or Vest inside. The Convertible Jackets are a part of the Tri-Lite, Outland, Universe, and Biolight lines. Each has an internal zip/snap-in system to accommodate an Insulator for cold days. Insulators work great as an outer layer, too.

With such a vast spectrum of outerwear, any rider can find protection and comfort in any conditions. Burton's worldwide team needs that kind of performance, and for 20 years, has pushed development ahead. It's not that Burton thinks of everything, it's that the riders experience it, and Burton listens.
