PR: Tom Sims Ends Relationship With DNR And
Files For Temporary Restraining Order |
Van's Names Gordon Lee VP of National Sales (8-23-96) PR: Variflex to Manufacture and Market Barfoot Snoboards (8-21-96) |
| In an effort to maintain rightful ownership and restore stability to
one of the legendary American names in snowboarding, Tom Sims, founder and
principal shareholder of Sims Sports, Inc. has given notice of termination
and revocation of license to DNR Sportsystem, Ltd. In addition, in a complaint
filed in Santa Barbara County Superior Court in Santa Barbara, California,
Sims has requested a temporary restraining order to prevent DNR from taking
steps to negatively affect the Sims name, brand, and trademark.
Tom Sims said, "This action is a very positive step for Sims Sports. This brand has been synonymous with technical innovation, high performance, and quality. But the relationship with DNR had deteriorated to the point that I was left with no recourse but to end the relationship. I am excited about finally having the structure to ensure that my innovations appear in the Sims line only at the highest level of quality with superior engineering. We are committed to becoming the number one brand in snowboarding and giving our riders the ultimate snowboard experience, and that means we must insist on effective control over the brand and the quality of the product from all our suppliers." Earlier this year, to support Sims' goal of becoming the top snowboard brand worldwide, the company created and implemented a Supplier Qualification Program with the industry's most rigorous standards for quality, including a requirement that every supplier be ISO 9000 and 9001 certified or actively seeking it. Beginning with the 97/98 season, SQP will ensure that all Sims' suppliers conform to the highest quality standards with the ultimate goal being 100% product quality and on-time delivery. Sims also has recently added the state-of-the-art Thrashers Corner R&D Lab where every Sims product is put through rigorous stress and scientific quantitative testing such as bonding strength and flex analysis. This lab and extensive on-snow testing at Stevens Pass, Washington, allow Sims to translate the on-snow experience of riders into a laboratory environment that improves the products, such as, innovations pertaining to durability and lighter weight. Sims also have invested heavily in creating an experienced, aggressive management team to achieve their leadership goals. Sims is confident that its dealers and distributors will be well serviced for this season which is another record-breaking year for the company, reflecting the inherent strength of the brand. Despite the notice to terminate DNR, Sims expects a smooth transition into the 97/98 season with plans to continue to work directly with the same network of international distributors, many of whom started working with Sims well before the DNR relationship.
