BEN HARPER - The Will To Live
(Virgin)
Release Date: Unknown
Review: Angel Bennett
(July 31, 1997)

Take the mellowest Lenny Kravitz tracks and extricate the funk without ruining the groove, then infuse the lyrics with shaman-istic wisdom and you'll find yourself holding the third release from Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals. From the electrically charged single, "Faded," to the sentimental "Roses From My Friends" Harpers songwriting talents and radiant voice are showcased beautifully. The real magic of this album is the way Harper masterfully wields his Weissenborn acoustic lap guitar to slap out the delta-bluesy "Homeless Child" and the short but sweet "Number Three." He takes the spiritulism of Bob Marley, the inventiveness of Jimi Hendrix and somehow manages to create his own original sound!
