SUGAR RAY - Floored
(Atlantic)
Release Date: 6/24/97
Review: Angel Bennett
(July 31, 1997)

Sugar Ray's first single, the ultra-catchy, "Fly" has most likely already made your acquaintance thanks to heavy rotation on the radio. It's hard not to like the easy going Spanish riff that spills from the ditty. It's intoxicating like a gold margarita. This acoustic stiff drink, however, is absolutely necessary if you plan on choking down the rest of the album. It's as heavy as a jumbo plate of re-fried beans and unfortunately just as bland. While the intensity is still there, the cleverness has almost completely escaped every song. After Sugar Ray's amazing debut "Lemonade And Brownies" my expectations for the band flew sky high. Consequently, the title of this release, "Floored" is appropriate because that's just exactly how I felt after listening to the under-whelming follow up.
