FLAMING LIPS - 1984-1990
(Restless)
Release Date:
Review: Mark Woodlief
(November 03, 1998)

For serious Flaming Lips fans, the most revealing part of this 15-song collection of the band's pre-major label career will be founder Wayne Coyne's liner notes. Coyne candidly chronicles the band's philosophical and musical development in clear, open-eyed terms that will doubtlessly aid fans in their appreciation for what Oklahoma's coolest band has done for rock and roll.

For those new to the Flaming Lips' crazed take on rock, 1984-1990 (subtitled "A Collection Of Songs Representing An Enthusiasm For Recording ... By Amateurs ... Or The Accidental Career") could do no worse than inspire you to form your own band. And take up the torch thousands before you have burned in garages, basements, parties and clubs across the globe. With rarities included for Flips completists (did you buy the band's Sub Pop Single Of The Month, the Neil Young tribute album, The Bridge, or the Guitarrorist comp when they came out?) and a video of "Unconsciously Screamin'" for CD-ROM users, this compilation is more than just another money-grubbing "best of" -- some of these songs aren't, in fact, their best at all. Still, 1984-1990 serves as a valuable historical document of one of the most original and fun-loving rock bands alive.
