ABSINTHE
(Vertical Addiction Films)
Lee Crane
(October 05, 1997)
Riders: Jay Nelson, Marc Frank, Jimmy Halopoff, Kurt Wastell, Axel Pauporte, J2, Jeremy Jones, Jacob Soderqvist, Tina Basich, Marius Sommer, Tamus Gannon, and Travis Parker.
Comments: Don't let this scare you, but in Absinthe, Justin Hostynek and Bill Gallen have created what could be the most beautiful snowboard movie of all time. The box says "filmed entirely in glorious black and white," and it's absolutely true.
From the moment the titles begin rolling it's obvious that this is not another run-of-the-mill snowboarding and music video. Sure, it's got the beautiful black and white footage and an eclectic soundtrack, but it also includes the most fun-to-watch collection of snowboarding of any movie this year. Jay Nelson and Tamus Gannon ruled it as did the rest of the riders.
It's difficult to say exactly why, but Absinthe has a hypnotic magnetism. Before I knew it I'd watched it three times. Obviously Byron and Shelley had great taste in beverages.
Absinthe is my pick for snowboard movie of the year. If you don't buy this one you're bummed.
