The SOL Groove Vol. 1 Num.
14
(April 30, 1997)
Hey, It's the Last Day of April
Yes, even though part of the nation is still getting pummled with snow
(Colorado), and others are underwater (North Dakota), and while the West
Coast is rocking (Northridge) we at the Groove still manage to get our little
meme out to the snowboard world. It's a squeek that's heard around the snowboard
world but this week it's more or a roar.
Last issue we said we were making the Groove shorter, then we heard from
Alfonso A. Barba who said, "Enjoyed my first version of The Groove. I wish
it was longer." So to keep Alfonso happy we loaded this one up.
CORRECTION SECTION
Before we get into the "what's new" section of the longer, deeper Groove
14 we need to make a couple corrections. Caroline R. Brown was nice enough
to point out that "the last four times that you've had Devun Walsh's name
in your articles, it's been spelled, "Devin", which is...well...wrong." Thanks
Caroline and we're sorry. From now on Devan's name will be spelled, "Deven."
We mean, "Devun." Damn.
Everyone who tried to get to the "ALL-NEW" SOL Manufacturer Directory using
the URL we published in the Groove 13 (Dave Sorensen and Claude Labrecque
to name two), will be happy to know that it wasn't your browser. It was our's.
Thinking it wouldn't really matter we clipped nearly a mile of useless jargon
right off the end of the URL. Now, after having suffered through a long lecture
by one of the InterZine tech weenies we understand more than we needed to
know about "uniform resource locators."
The proper "uniform resource locator" for the
SOL
Manufacturer Directory
WHAT'S NEW SECTION
Volumns of Vegetate
Verbage
Mt. Hood Meadows (in Oregon) holds a snowboard contest each year to raise
money for wild flowers. Apparently, management wants to plant pretty wild
flowers in the areas that were clear cut to make room for ski runs. That
seems like such a wonderful cause that we sent SOL Associate Editor Shanti
Sosienski to check it out.
Idaho Road
Show
Ross Peterson wrote a story about a road trip through Idaho. Angie Silvy
took pictures. We put it up on the web. That leaves one thing: you reading
it. What are you waiting for. Get on it. (Please remember: Ross Peterson
would like to be known as a "rider" not a "writer." Okay?)
Both Legs Work
Like A Charm
Hypothesis: you can carve better by using both legs to pressure your edge.
Jack Michaud wrote a much longer, more indepth version of the prior sentence
in SOL's Carve section. If carving floats your boat then paddle on over.
Copper Mountain
Team Super Cross
Team BoarderCross at Copper Mountain! Big money prizes. Action. Crashes.
Yeah, huh!
Sound Check
Snow Job at Mt. Hood
Meadows
We've never had to knock on wood, but we know someone who has so we're going
to Snow Job to check out the $20,000 North American Snowboard Series Big
Air Finals and see The Mighty (say it again) Mighty Bosstones, Social Distortion,
Third Eye Blind & Manray at Mt. Hood Meadows on May 3. We'll have updates
through out the day as well as backstage photos (we're that cool) and maybe
some interviews with some people. We sure do hope the crowds don't trample
any of those wild flowers.
INDUSTRY NEWS
Airwalk Quad
Airwalk has re-work their Quad binding and now it looks real solid. Check
it out and let us know what you think about it.
Ooooh, Oooh, Witchy Snowboard See How High They Fly-I-I-I
Sims
has some new boards that they're calling Project Hex. They have aluminum
honeycomb tip and tail inserts and endgrain suma wood cores. They have a
lower swing weight and come in 146, 148, 153, and 158 cm sizes. The Sims
PR person says, "Basically you can spin like a top and ride like the Devil."
That's all for the super long version of the Groove. Good-Bye.
If, in some bout of insanity, you decide you don't want to receive the SOL
Groove in your mailbox point your browser to this URL:
http://www.solsnowboarding.com/register/unsub.cfm
Then you won't have to send us mail like this:
"Get away and go to the rock from which you came from." --Austin555
"QUIT SENDING ME THIS STUFF!" --psycho.
"Anyway, I've tried to remove my name from your mailing list twice now, and
I am still receiving SOL. Please do not send me any more editions. Thank
you." -- Erika Jordan of UC Davis.
The Groove 14 was brought to you by Jones
Soda Co. makers of the amazing Blue Bubble Gum soda.
