Peter Line Takes The Big Air
Forget the infamous bar hopping sixth street, Zilker Park was the place to be Friday night as the men's snowboard big air went off after sunset. Some of the best spinderellas in snowboarding were present at the MTV Sports & Music Festival throwing themselves off a fifty foot high man-made snow mound. Competitors included Jim Rippey, Peter Line, Bryan Iguchi, Todd Richards, Jason Borgsteade, Jason Brown, Mikey Basich, Kevin Jones, Devun Walsh, BJ Leines, Tex Devenport.
"This shouldn't be here," Todd Richards shouted into the microphone to the 6,000 spectators who were on-hand to watch the snowboarders and then Wu-Tang Clan who played after the jump. All of the snowboarders who came for the event seemed to be a little in awe of the whole production, as this is only the second time in the history of big air contests in the U.S. that a dryland jump like this has been created.
The competition was judged by the women competitors who had performed in the late afternoon. It must have been hard to decide the winner of the event as Kevin Jones pulled 900, BJ Leines tried to pull off a misty but ate some snow instead, Peter Line stomped a corkscrew 7, and both Bryan Iguchi and Jason Brown threw down big floaty methods. Apparently Guch was heard saying the next day that he was bummed he pulled a method instead of his more signature spinning. Tex Devenport pleased the crowd with a backflip and Mikey Basich pulled a frontflip.
The men were given three chances to stomp a perfect landing and win the panel of pro women over. Peter Line took it with ease as he stomped all three of his big airs. This wasn't surprising as he is best known for his well-perfected competition air acrobatics. The winners of this weekends event will be taking home two tround trip tickets to anywhere in the world, a trophy, and will be seen by people around the world on MTV when the show airs November 7th and 8th.
