TWS Suspends Publication of Snowboard Life January 22, 2001
Oceanside, CA- January 22, 2001- TransWorld Media announced today the closure of Snowboard Life magazine. Since its launch in the winter of 1995, Snowboard Lifes mission had been to offer the growing snowboard market an alternative to the heavily freestyle oriented snowboard magazines available on the newsstand-- a magazine geared more toward service and information. Maybe Snowboard Life was ahead of the curve for this market as the advertising commitments just werent there to continue its mission. Due to this, TransWorld made the difficult decision not to enter into a seventh season of publishing Snowboard Life.
"It's a sad day for all of us at TransWorld," said group publisher Tim Wrisley upon the announcement. "Snowboard Life was really coming together editorially, and subscribers loved the magazine because it offered rock-solid information they needed about snowboarding. We just felt it would be unwise to continue without the support of the industry. It's a shame that the advertising community didnt embrace it more, as it ultimately could have offered growth to the market."
Snowboard Life was published six times a year and offered product information, resort service, and a broader view of snowboarding than the current freestyle-oriented snowboard magazines.
"We still feel very strongly about this segment of the market and the need for a more service-oriented snowboard magazine," Wrisley continued. "Our plan is to pull back, do some in-depth, third-party market research about this segment, and really analyze how best to deliver the critical information needed to help grow the sport. With TransWorld SNOWboarding, the biggest snowboard mag in the world, we have an obligation to cover where the market is now, which is more freestyle. We do a great job there, we just feel there is another growing segment that is underserved right now."
Snowboard Life is published by TransWorld Media, a division of Time Inc.
