Keystone Opening Day: Or Welcome Back to the Wonderful World of Foot Pain
by Todd Richards
(October 22, 1996)

PR: Second Annual Boarderfest Returns to Buttermilk Mountain (10-22-96)
Test the Limits in Snowmass (10-22-96)
Today is October 21 1996 and Keystone resort in Colorado opened their slopes today at 6 am. This was a special day for the former ski(zzzzzzzz) only mountain. As of October 21, Keystone is now a snowboard friendly mountain. So this was no ordinary opening day, to put it lightly.

I had big plans to be there at 6 am, but did the usual and over slept. As we finally rallied at about 10 am I thought to myself, "I can't wait to see the first confrontation, some diehardon skier who wasn't going to let "his" mountain fall into the hands of the enemy.

I played all kinds of scenarios over in my head, me getting socked by cap'n spandex because I was looking like I was having too much fun, pole in the eye by a disgruntled woman who thought we were scraping all the snow (opening day, yeah right) off the trails. You know that sort of thing.

So we finally make it there under clear, butt-ass cold skies and see the lone snake of snow they were calling a trail. The group was getting excited, `cept for me cause my boots shrank two sizes since summer.

Here we are at the former forbidden zone. Everything seemed normal enough, probably because there were about 60% snow-snivelers. I suggested that we be extra courteous toward our two sticker mountain companions. Grumbles were heard. So much for Todd the diplomat. We got on the lift without incident, I started to think this was going to be enjoyable except for the mind-numbing pain in my lower extremities.

We're at the top! We head down a winding trail that is seeming boring until bam a bunch of ungroomed whales of snow. I couldn't believe my eyes riders were popping off all of them and the ski patrol was just chilling there. I wonder if they didn't have time to groom them or if it was on purpose. I tend to think the former, Keystone not having to ever deal with snowboard use of terrain, just thinking that people would just go around. HE HE HE.

After about seven or eight runs we left , mostly because my feet fell off, but we were beat. All we heard in the parking lot was how rad this place is, if people are this stoked on the first day I can't wait until mid season.

Oh yeah, they (Keystone) plan to open their park in three weeks. Pipes, yes that's pipes are going to open then too. Wahoo!!!!
