Sunday River Flows (10-5-96) The Beast of the East is Unleashed |
Recreational skiers and boarders will now have an opportunity to experience the heart-pounding start, the thrill of competition, and the rush of downhill racing at Snowmass Ski Area's new speed course. As the only lift-served speed course in the country, skiers and riders may reach speeds ranging from 35 to 65 mph. A timing trap will track each person's speed and at the day's end a certificate will be awarded to racers highlighting their top speed. In order to obtain optimal speed and stability, a skier may rent long boards at an hourly rate. The course, open December through March, will be located on Slot off Sam's Knob peak. The course will operate from 9:30 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. on one scheduled day per week. For $15 participants will receive instruction to cover basic racing technique, "rules of the road," a helmet, and as many runs on the course as their ability will allow. Within the first hour, each racer will begin the course in the 35 - 45 mph zone. Once people are certified at this level they may progress to the next speed zone, 45 - 55 mph, during the second hour. The final hour of the day will be reserved for those individuals who have proved themselves capable of reaching speeds between 55 and 65 mph. If at any point racers are unable to progress to the next level they may continue to ski or ride at their current speed throughout the hour. As the speeds increase, the start will be moved further up on Slot. Each month those individuals who have been certified at the 65-mph level will be invited to attend a special session designed to permit competitors to reach speeds up to 80 mph.
