Sunday River Opens Earliest Ever (10-4-96)
Killington Resort First Open for the New Season
Last night the big gun of the east turned on their big guns and laid down enough snow to become the first to area open for the 1996-97 season. This makes Killington the only area open in the United States. This was Killington's 36th year of being the first eastern resort to open.

There's still grass but there's
snow between the blades. Yep.

A short section off the Killington peak chair was open to skiers and riders, access was via chairlift which required uploading as well as downloading. For opening day, lift tickets were complementary for the approximately 150 alpine enthusiasts who participated.

Top eastern riders quickly built a kicker and enjoyed an impromptu air and style session. Pat Bridges, Mark Sullivan, Joah Buley, Jeremy Baye, Dick Nessover, Chris Daniele, Mary Beth Zambrano, and Pete Brinkerhoff were just a few of the riders who threw down the goods off the kicker. A few skiers took the kicker too, including Olympic Gold Medalist Donna Weinbrech.

Killington will continue to make snow throughout the season, and try to become the last area to close in 1997. Sunday River, ME is scheduled to open tomorrow.
