| KILLINGTON, Vt.--June 22, 1997--Killington, the East's largest and most
diverse ski and snowboard resort, ended its season today, breaking the resort's
closing data record.
The latest date the resort has ever operated until was June 21 back in the 1983-84 season. Killington opened its 1996-97 season back on Oct. 4 and easily posts the East's longest season for the 36th consecutive year. After 233 days and a season that stretched almost nine months, skiers and snowboards made their last turns on Superstar trail. Once again, snowmakers built a 30-foot "glacier" on Superstar to ensure a season stretching into June for the sixth straight year. Killington also continued its tradition of offering skiing and riding in June for the 13th time thanks to more than 300 inches of natural snow since October and massive snowmaking efforts all season long. "It's pretty amazing we still have enough snow to ski on at the end of June," said Allen Wilson, managing director for the resort. "Skiing and riding in June is part of our culture and a part of Killington. The longer we can stay open in June, the longer skiers and riders can enjoy the sport they love. It's a long three and a half months until we open again in early October." Summer activities have already begun to kick into high gear with 40-miles of mountain biking terrain with trails and single tracks for riders of all abilities, guided interpretive hikes through the renowned Merrell Hiking Center, an 18-hole par 72 golf course with gorgeous mountain views, tennis camps and scenic chairlift rides to 4,241-foot Killington Peak, the highest point reached by an aerial lift in New England. Pico Mountain at Killington also offers an alpine slide, mini-golf, a driving range and "the bungy thing." |
