Zach Horwitz Signs with Nokia

By Press Release

November 17, 1999

Cape Elizabeth, Maine -- Carlisle Sports Management announced today a new deal between Nokia and Zach Horwitz, the overall fourth-ranked FIS half-pipe rider in the world.

Horwitz is the second of three U.S. riders to be chosen as part of Nokia's worldwide athlete roster. Fifteen athletes from various countries and regions including Japan, Canada and Europe make up the roster.

Nokia sponsored only Anton Pogue in the '98-'99 season and decided to step up its athlete associations this year to help support its primary snowboarding effort: title sponsorship of the Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup.

How did Nokia pick Horwitz? "Zach is natural selection for us. We look for athletes that we believe will do well with the media and also end up on the podium," says Stuart Flowers, account director at Worldwide Promotions in Belgium, Nokia's sports marketing firm. "He has a tremendous and vibrant personality which is very appealing to us," he concluded.

With Nokia finding new ways to support snowboarding through athletes, Horwitz comments that "they are a great sponsor. They are very active with the athletes they work with. I have already been to Argentina and Poland with them so far this year. They are one of the first companies I've worked with that is really using me as a representative and helping me. I think it will be a very positive relationship," he continued.

Horwitz, 24, lives in Carbondale, Colorado and trains with the U.S. Snowboard Team at various resorts around the country. He has plans to compete in several competitions around the world this season.

Carlisle Sports Management is an athlete marketing and management company specializing in alternative sports.
