Pray For Snow Day at Snowbird

Snowbird, Utah - Despite long-range forecasts calling for a return to Utah's renowned winter storm cycles, Snowbird will hold its annual "Pray For Snow Day" Saturday, Oct. 14, from noon to 4 p.m.
This year's festivities include Native American tribal dancers, live bluegrass music by Mr. Whoopie and discounted Tram rides ($9).
"The recent snowfall gave us all a taste of what's right around the corner," said Snowbird President/COO Bob Bonar. "New Mineral Basin terrain, a faster Tram and hopefully a great snow year should combine for an unforgettable year to ski and ride at the 'Bird."
Summer improvements for the 2000/01 winter season include expanded snowmaking to the top of the Gadzoom chairlift, a $600,000 upgrade to the Tram that will trim precious time off the trip to Hidden Peak and several restaurant remodels. The Pray for Snow Day's host, Al Black Bird, a Helushka War Dancer of the Omaha Tribe, will entertain and educate with a celebration of Mother Earth. Native American dancers in full tribal dress will perform a variety of cultural dances including The Hoop Dance, Women's Jingle Dance, Men's Grass Dance and more. Al Black Bird will describe the traditions and explain the dances. Traditional drumming - "The Heartbeat of Mother Earth" - will set the tone and a Native American Medicine Man will bless the Earth and pray for snow.
The Native American tribal dancers will perform at noon and 2 p.m. and Mr. Whoopie will perform at 1 and 3 p.m. All events will take place on the Snowbird Plaza Deck, accessed from Little Cottonwood Canyon by Entry 2 to the Snowbird Center.
This weekend - Oct. 7 and 8 - is the final weekend for Oktoberfest. Catch live music, dancing, food and activities on the Plaza Deck while the leaves are turning from green to bright oranges and yellows. Little Cottonwood Canyon is aglow with fall colors yet temperatures still are comfortable enough for outdoor dining.
