On-Site Education Last year at the third annual Boarding for Breast Cancer at Sierra-at-Tahoe, April 18, there was more education and awareness information available than ever before. The BBC crew teamed up with both The Breast Cancer Fund and Susan G. Komen Foundation to ensure that information was distributed including breast exam shower cards, healthy living tips, posters, and magazines and awareness was the number one priority at the event. Representatives from both organizations were on hand to answer questions and nurse practitioners stationed under the educational tent demonstrated to attendees how to give a self breast exam, using dummies and breast cancer molds with various fibrous lumps. As in BBC's past, we've learned that the best approach is the live approach. If you know how to give yourself an exam and recognize what a lump feels like, you're chances of early detection increase exponentially. Also available in the education area was be "Tough-Titties," a San Francisco-based bike clothing company who, in an effort to raise awareness about young women and breast cancer, is donating proceeds from sales of their T's to breast cancer research. Susan Izzo, our BBC photo exhibitor, displayed her ever evolving exhibit which focuses on women who's lives have been impacted by breast cancer in some way. Her photo exhibit, which premiered at the BBC last year, proved very inspirational and has prompted the BBC staff to add more artistic expression to the event, including a showing by Kay Minto, a sculptor and member of Healing Legacies, a registry organization that promotes artistic expression as a means of dealing with breast cancer, W.i.g. Magazine with their most recent issues that include breast cancer awareness tips, facts, and first-person stories, and the Surfrider/Snowrider Foundation, known for investigating environmental issues and their correlation to health as one of the main goals of their organization. Breast exam shower cards, tips for young women, posters, and magazines
will be available for those who attend the on-site education area. Look
for the Big Top tent in the heart of the BBC circus. |
