ORANGE, Calif.--February 18, 1997--Vans, Inc. (Nasdaq:VANS) announced today that Gary H. Schoenfeld, 34, the Company's President and Chief Operating Officer, will assume the additional responsibility of Chief Executive Officer. He succeeds Walter E. Schoenfeld, 66, who continues as Chairman of the Board.

"When Gary assumed the role of President seven months ago, he effectively took full responsibility for the daily operations of the Company," said Walter Schoenfeld. "Clearly, Gary and his team have demonstrated that they have the vision and ability to continue the growth and momentum we have established. We have just concluded several important trade shows in the U.S. and abroad, and the reaction to our footwear, snowboard boots and apparel has been very positive. Gary Schoenfeld commented, "Over the past two years, we have developed a very focused strategy and have assembled an extremely talented and dedicated management team. I look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead, and I am very bullish about the future of our Company and the prospects for continuing the successful growth of our brand worldwide."
