Body Recovered After Utah Avalanche
11/8/98

MESSAGES: The season is just starting and already tragedy strikes. What does this mean for the coming season?

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Rescue workers battled a steady snowstorm Sunday to recover the body of a New Hampshire man who was killed when an avalanche swept a party of five snowboarders down a rocky slope in the Wasatch Mountains.

Jeff Clement, 21, of Henniker, N.H., was killed Saturday by an avalanche that swept down the cliffs and exposed rocks of Mount Baldy, a favorite destination for snowboarders between the Alta and Snowbird ski resorts. His body was recovered late Sunday afternoon.

Four others caught in the avalanche survived. One woman was hospitalized in serious condition with multiple injuries.

Clement, who was the last in his group to descend, apparently triggered the snowslide. Two of the snowboarders were buried up to their armpits and were able to free themselves and dig out the two other survivors.
