ASR brings snow to San Diego
(9-8-98) Edited by Robyn Hakes
As the ASR Trade Expo rolls into town this week, so does our first glimpse of the beloved white wonder and the crispy weather we’re all waiting for. Though the trade show itself is not big for snowboarding, this is the time of year when snowboarders tolerate the heat of September in San Diego, to get a glimpse of the latest flicks. But there are also plenty of events for those of you not ready for the snow just yet.
Kicking off the week, TransWorld SNOWboarding will debut, Snowblind, the first installment of this season's video magazines. Featuring snowboarding sensations such as Bryan Iguchi, J.P. Walker, Peter Line, Darren Cingel, Kevin Jones, and Jeremy Jones, to name a few.
The premiere was Tuesday, September 8, at The Cafe at 25 East E St. in Encinitas at 7:00 p.m. (See Review of Snowblind)
Then the real fun begins as the antics of the action-sports industry takes over downtown San Diego. The ASR show is officially scheduled for September 10-12, 1998.
While the days will be filled with walking the show floor, checking out all the new technologies and innovative styles, the nights will be filled with parties and premieres. Thursday, September 10, Justin Hoystnek debuts his movie Black Box, along with Reef Brazils’ surf flick "The Reef At Todos." Location and time TBA.
If you’re looking for something to bring out the art enthusiast in you, check out Modart, at the Culy Trucking Building, 338 Seventh Ave., San Diego. This event will feature over 100 well-known artists, DJs, fashion designers, musicians, and related companies.
An artist reception kicks off the evening at 8:00 p.m., including many top athletes, such as snowboarders Jamie Lynn, Mike Parillo, and Bryan Iguchi, among others. A fashion show featuring styles from Planet Earth, Redsand, Hapa, Ton Clothing, Volcom, and more begins at 10:00 p.m. The party will continue into the wee hours of the morning. Cost at the door is ten dollars with all proceeds going to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Carlsbad. For more information, contact event coordinator Mona Mukherjea at: ext. 143, or .
If the pugilist's arts are more to your liking professional skateboarder Simon Woodstock returns to the ring, taking on a new challenger: Paul McFadden. "He's not a snowboarder but he's definitely a fighter," says event coordinator Chris May of May Day Productions. The fight will be held Thursday, September 10 at the San Diego Sports Arena. The entry fee is fifteen dollars. Additional entertainment will be provided by The Long Beach Dub All Stars, Lucy's Fur Coat, Slightly Stupid, and Woodstock's band Sketch.
Friday night is the ultimate snow storm at Spreckles Theater on Broadway, downtown. Mack Dawg will be showing its tenth movie Decade, which will include modern moves from the Forum team as well as J.P. Walker, Blaise Rosenthal, Chad Otterstrom, and others, as well as reminders of seasons past.
At the same location, North Of Heaven TB7, the new flick from Standard Films, will be hitting the big screen for the first time. Expect to see unreal lines in locations such as Tahoe, Alaska, Utah, and the contest tour from riders like Kevin Jones, Guillanme Chastagnol, Noah Salasnek, Dave Downing, Joni Makinen, and many of your other favorites.
If you’re in the mood for some good tunes, check out The Party, hosted by Alphanumeric along with Axion, Nixon, Stress Magazine, StreetMachine, and Spy, Friday night at E Street Alley.
