Party At Surfside
By Lance Veron 10/26/98
Did somebody say carnival? Surfside Sports in Newport Beach, California did. On October 3 it hosted the seventh-annual, pre-season, one-day only snowboard sale and carnival.
Manufacturer reps were out in force to show their support with games and activities for customers, along with all the 1998/99 snow goods. The day raised more than 700 dollars for local charities, and four hundred people turned out for the event.
Duke Edukas co-owner, along with Paul Burnette, were pleasantly surprised with the turn out, and had nothing but smiles as they measured the lines from the registers. Early on, Burnette found himself under fire at the dunk tank set up at the Burton tent. Customers and employees fired tennis balls at a target to release a whole lot of water over his head.
There was plenty of action going on everywhere, from Lib Techıs bobbing for apples, K2ıs ping-pong-ball basketball, Sims and Dragonıs pool table game, Snow Summitıs bean-bag toss, Morrowıs black-jack table, Mtn. Highıs wheel of fortune, and of course, the Forum posse was out in full force with autograph signing by Peter Line. Salomon also showed its sweet side by having a pie-eating contest with the winner walking away with a new snowboard (not to mention berry pie stains!).
Hot dogs and hamburgers were cooked up on the grill for everyone to enjoy, and rumor has it Edukas at so much he couldnıt leave the back room.
When it came time for the raffle, Greg Tomlinson (G.T.), the Arnette rep stole the show and did his magic with the microphone. The crowd was spoiled with free-bees, as some lucky people walked away with anything from a T-shirt to a ı98/99 snowboard, all donated by the reps.
